03 — The framework

The four pillars of the P-COCC Model

The P-COCC model is built on four key pillars that collectively form the foundation of a people-centered workplace. Each pillar plays a crucial role in creating an environment where all individuals can thrive and contribute to the organization's success.

Everyone Matters

This pillar emphasizes the inherent value and importance of each individual within the organization. It recognizes that every employee, regardless of their position, background, or personal characteristics, has unique insights, skills, and perspectives to offer.

Why it mattersWhen people feel they truly matter, it fosters a sense of belonging and psychological safety. This leads to increased engagement, creativity, and willingness to contribute ideas. It also helps in retaining talent and building a positive organizational culture.
In brief

Recognizing the inherent value of each team member. People are more than the titles they possess. Embracing diversity is essential.

Everyone Serves

This pillar promotes a culture of mutual support and collaboration. It encourages all organization members to view their roles not just as individual responsibilities but as part of a larger ecosystem where everyone contributes to the success of others and the organization as a whole.

Why it mattersA service-oriented mindset breaks down silos, improves communication, and enhances teamwork. It creates a more supportive work environment where knowledge sharing and mentorship become the norm, improving overall performance and innovation.
In brief

Encouraging a culture of mutual support and collaboration. Everyone performs with excellence & dedication in an inclusive and healthy workplace.

Everyone Receives

This pillar ensures that all individuals have access to the resources, opportunities, and support they need to succeed in their roles and grow professionally. It emphasizes equitable distribution of benefits, recognition, and development opportunities.

Why it mattersWhen everyone receives what they need to succeed, it levels the playing field and addresses systemic inequalities. This leads to a more motivated workforce, improved job satisfaction, and the ability to unlock the full potential of all employees, regardless of their background or starting point.
In brief

Everyone receives equitable opportunities, compensation, respect, and appreciation. Ensuring all team members benefit from shared knowledge and resources.

Everyone Achieves

This final pillar focuses on enabling and celebrating the accomplishments of all individuals within the organization. It recognizes that success comes in many forms and that each person's achievements contribute to the organization's overall success.

Why it mattersBy focusing on achievement for all, organizations can tap into their workforce's full range of talents and capabilities. This pillar encourages continuous improvement, goal-setting, and recognition of both individual and collective successes, driving overall organizational performance.
In brief

Fostering an environment where success is collective and celebrated by all. Individual accomplishment leads to collective success. Departmental success is a result of team success. Successful departments drive organizational success. Everyone gains belonging and community.

These four pillars create a comprehensive framework for establishing a genuinely people-centered workplace. They address the fundamental human needs for recognition, purpose, support, and accomplishment. By implementing these pillars, organizations can create an environment where diversity is acknowledged and leveraged as a strength, equity is built into all processes and systems, and inclusion is a lived experience rather than just a policy.

This approach leads to higher employee satisfaction, improved retention, increased innovation, and improved organizational outcomes. It transforms the workplace into a community where everyone can thrive, contribute, and achieve their full potential, aligning personal growth with organizational success.

The foundation of the P-COCC model's four pillars — Everyone Matters, Everyone Serves, Everyone Receives, and Everyone Achieves — ensures a sustainable people-centered workplace by addressing fundamental human needs and organizational dynamics. By recognizing the inherent value of each individual, fostering a culture of mutual support, ensuring equitable access to resources and opportunities, and enabling achievement for all, this model creates a comprehensive framework for organizational success. This holistic approach not only enhances employee satisfaction and retention but also drives innovation and overall performance by aligning personal growth with organizational goals. Ultimately, the P-COCC model transforms the workplace into a thriving community where diversity is leveraged as a strength, equity is systemically integrated, and inclusion is a lived experience, leading to sustained organizational excellence.

04 — The origin

The organization as one body

With 78 distinct organs, the human body exemplifies a system of remarkable complexity. Organizations, in their own right, mirror this intricacy.

The P-COCC model emerged from a profound reflection on the intricate nature of organizational function, drawing parallels with the complexity of the human body. The creator of this model, Stephany D. Baker, observed that organizations, much like biological systems, comprise numerous diverse components working in harmony to sustain the whole.

Considering the human body as an analogy, one can appreciate the vast array of elements — blood vessels, nerves, organs, skin, and flesh — each unique in function yet indispensable to the body's existence. Organizations mirror this intricacy, with a multitude of stakeholders forming the corporate "body."

The model posits that every member of an organization is vital to its success, much like every organ and tissue is crucial to the human body's well-being. It emphasizes that organizations must pay attention to all of their essential components. The framework asserts that all members should experience a sense of belonging through purposeful inclusion and appreciation of the diversity that makes each organization and team unique.

The model cautions against exclusion or disregard of any individual, likening such actions to treating a part of the body as insignificant. It underscores the importance of recognizing and valuing every contributor to maintain the health and efficacy of the organizational whole.

05 — People-Centered Organizations

Strategic priorities

Priority 01

People

People-centered organizations recognize all employee's backgrounds and contributions and provide growth and development opportunities for them. These organizations acknowledge that individuals may bring past experiences, including personal challenges and biases, into their new roles. Understanding this, they create an environment of care, compassion, empathy, and healing to support their workforce. This approach helps employees overcome negative experiences and thrive in their current positions.

Priority 02

Purpose

At all levels, a transparent and authentic organizational purpose is articulated and understood in people-centered organizations. They ensure that this purpose is effectively communicated and internalized by every member, from leadership to local teams. Each team is encouraged to develop its vision that aligns with the broader organizational mission. The overarching goal is often to positively impact the world, including preparing individuals for inclusive leadership roles, fostering creativity and innovation, and actively addressing inequitable practices and social injustices.

Priority 03

Performance

People-centered organizations motivate their employees by helping them align their personal abilities, values, and passions with the organization's objectives to impact the local community and the wider world positively. They cultivate a culture of excellence rooted in recognizing and appreciating each individual's value and contribution. This approach leads to intentional workforce engagement, fostering healthy performance and a sense of belonging. By creating an environment where employees feel valued and integral to the organization's success, these organizations inspire their teams to perform at their best and contribute meaningfully to the organization's goals.
